Blue Cactus Shanty

A home with a touch of an upscale hotel

Fun Fact: the Kilimarathon route (for both 42.2 km and 21.1km) passes 500 meters from Blue Cactus Shanty at which point there is still a grueling 20-minute run to the finish line making for a tempting "diversion" for those staying with us.

Fun Fact: It is common for climbers to forget to pack ear plugs, which can be essential items. If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and you are sensitive to noise or a light sleeper, it is important to remember to bring earplugs. The high altitude can affect sleeping patterns and cause your fellow climbers to snore heavily, which may disturb your sleep. Therefore, earplugs can come in handy to ensure a good night's rest.

The then new headquaters of the Kilimanjaro Native Co-Operative Union (KNCU) was inaugurated on 1st September 1950 by Sir Charles C.F. Dundas.  Today the majestic building still serves as the HQ.  It straddles Old Moshi Road and Kibo Road in downtown Moshi.  Fun-Fact: The building houses the first ever lift (elevator) in Moshi.  It can be seen here in the photo on the right.
